Il giorno di San Valentino in Inghilterra

Condividi su:

14th February, St. Valentine’s Day or, as it is often simply referred to, Valentine’s Day, although it has its roots in the 3rd century and is mentioned in early literary works such as Shakespeare’s Hamlet, only became a popular occasion for lovers to express their love for each other in 18th century romantic era England. Handwritten cards known as “Valentines” were sent, poems were written and flowers and confectionery were offered.
With modern printing in the 19th century Valentine’s Day celebration really took off. Today it is celebrated in many countries around the world and is mainly seen as a commercial event. However, what better excuse for a special day than a day for declaring one’s love for someone?
Elizabeth Barrett Browning, born in 1806 is one of the Victorian era’s best known poets. Her most famous works, in particular Sonnets from the Portuguese (1850), were inspired by her deep love for her husband, the poet Robert Browning who she married at the age of 40.
This beautiful poem by Elizabeth, a declaration of her love for Robert, was written to him before they were married and probably due to her poor health declares that her love for him will be even deeper after her death. Looking for an original way to say I love you? Make a handwritten card with these words set in a heart. It will be bound to impress the receiver!
How Do I Love Thee?
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning
