Today is Pooh Day! Today we celebrate the birth of Alan Alexander Milne the author of Winnie the Pooh.
As an adult, have you ever read âWinnie the Poohâ - a story about a teddy bear, his friends Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, not to mention his only human friend, Christopher Robin? Well, you might be surprised to know that one of the worldâs best loved childrenâs books was not written for children at all.
Milneâs intention was to appeal to the child that is in all of us. The first mention of this cuddly bear which belonged to Milneâs son, Christopher, was in a poem called âWhen we were very youngâ, published in âPunchâ magazine for adults. Pooh officially came into being as a short bedtime story in the Christmas eve edition of the Evening News newspaper of 1925 and this subsequently became the first chapter of the book entitled âWinnie the Poohâ published in 1926. This iconic, honey-loving bear and his friends even made it to Hollywood in a series of Disney adaptations of his adventures.
Although Pooh is not a very clever bear he has a big heart and is loved by all but especially Piglet. Here are some very intuitively, charming lines that I hope will appeal to the child in YOU:
âHow do you spell 'love'?" - Piglet
"You don't spell it...you feel it." - Poohâ
âWe'll be friends forever, won't we, Pooh?' asked Piglet.
Even longer,' Pooh answered.â
âPiglet sidled up to Pooh from behind. "Pooh?" he whispered.
"Yes, Piglet?"
"Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's hand. "I just wanted to be sure of you.â
âWhat day is it?" â Pooh.
It's today," squeaked Piglet.
My favourite day," said Pooh.â
